Moulded polyurethane is a versatile material used in a wide range of components, especially in the automotive and industrial sectors. Its combination of strength, flexibility, and lightweight properties makes it ideal for parts that must meet high functional and aesthetic standards. At HAVD, we specialize in taking ideas from concept to finished component, using advanced moulded polyurethane processes to ensure precision, performance, and durability.
How Moulded Polyurethane Works
The production of moulded polyurethane components combines precision, efficiency, and repeatability. Each step in the process is designed to ensure that the final part meets both functional and aesthetic requirements while allowing for flexibility in design and material properties.
Step 1 – Release Agent Application
The process begins with preparing the moulding tool, which can be placed on a stationary press or a round/oval table. To prevent the polyurethane from sticking, release agents are applied to both the upper and lower parts of the tool. Proper tool preparation is crucial for achieving consistent results and protecting the tool during repeated production cycles.
Step 2 – Adding Inserts
Some parts require reinforcement, which is added to the tool as inserts. A vision camera ensures that each insert is positioned accurately before the moulding begins. This step allows for precise integration of functional elements directly into the component, reducing the need for post-assembly.
Step 3 – Filling
The tool is heated to around 55–60°C, and the polyurethane mixture consisting of polyol, isocyanate and specialized additives, is pumped into the mould using CNC-controlled high-pressure systems.
Each part has a specific recipe, carefully adjusted to meet the required density, hardness and cushioning. Accurate filling ensures complete coverage of the mould and consistent quality in every component.
Step 4 – Curing
Once filled, the tool is closed, and the polyurethane begins to expand and cure over 4–6 minutes. This stage solidifies the part’s structure and locks in its final shape. Controlled curing provides strength, dimensional stability, and the desired surface characteristics.
Step 5 – Demoulding
After curing, the part is removed from the tool and placed on a table for cell crushing, preventing collapse and maintaining its integrity. Additional curing time is needed before the component moves to post-processing or packing. This careful handling certifies each part retains its designed form and mechanical properties.
Benefits of Moulded Polyurethane
- Precision and Repeatability – Every component is consistently produced to exact specifications.
- Integrated Functionality – Inserts and design features can be incorporated directly into the part.
- Material Flexibility – Adjust density, hardness, and weight according to functional requirements.
- Fast Cycle Time – Each component can be produced in 4–8 minutes.
- Durability and Performance – Carefully controlled curing and material selection ensure long-lasting parts.
