How Moulded Polyurethane Components Are Manufactured

Moulded polyurethane is often used in components that require both durability and formability. Through casting, it is possible to create parts with high precision and customized design. Here, we explain how the manufacturing process works.

From Mold to Finished Moulded Polyurethane Component

The production of polyurethane components always begins with a mold tool. The mold is created with high precision, tailored to the product’s function and design. Once the mold is ready, two liquids—polyol and isocyanate—are mixed. These chemically react, along with other additives, to form polyurethane. The mixture is poured into the mold, where it quickly begins to cure and take its final shape.

During curing, the moulded polyurethane expands, allowing it to fill even complex geometries with great accuracy. After the material has hardened, it is removed from the mold and undergoes post-processing. This can include cell crushing or the addition of components afterwards, such as gluing or sewing, depending on the product’s application and customer requirements. Quality is carefully controlled at every step.

At HAVD Group, much of this process is performed in-house, giving us full control over quality. Our production capabilities include casting, vacuum forming, and sewing, enabling us to combine multiple techniques in a single product solution.

Adaptability and Performance of Moulded Polyurethane

One of the biggest advantages of moulded polyurethane is its versatility. The material’s density, hardness, and shape can easily be adjusted based on the intended use. This makes it ideal for components that need to withstand daily wear while providing the right level of comfort—such as seats, armrests, and interior details in vehicles.

Additionally, moulded polyurethane is relatively lightweight, which is a significant benefit in industries where weight is critical. The material also has good dimensional stability, meaning components maintain their shape over time without losing functionality or appearance. Since polyurethane is cast directly in the mold, it’s possible to design parts with complex geometries, integrated functions, and variable thicknesses in the same product. This offers great design freedom while also enabling shorter lead times—especially for customized solutions in smaller series.
